If you’ve decided to work with a business coach, how should you go about it? There are almost as many business coaches today as there are attorneys. Okay, maybe there aren’t that many, but there are a lot of business coaches and they don’t all do the same thing.
Some business coaches advertise themselves as life coaches and their approach is broader than focusing on the business. They do things that may be of value, but is that what you’re looking for? A business coach should focus on your business and help you be more successful with it.
Start by checking references with anyone you decide to hire. This is very important because a business coach can tell you anything. His or her client’s won’t. The clients will tell it like it is.
A business coach will want to start by understanding your business by doing a Business Assessment. No one can offer you advice without first understanding your business and how you operate. What’s working and what’s not working in your business? What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What are the top three things you’re struggling with? What are your biggest concerns? You have to be open with your coach so that they can understand your problems from your point of view. Now here’s the interesting thing. Often times the business owner may be focused on the symptom rather than the problem. That’s where the coach will help you by seeing the cause, not just the symptom.
